Michigan-based syndicated talk show host Michael Patrick Shiels will host his morning radio and television show from Kennebunkport, Maine Wednesday - the morning after former President George H.W. Bush’s 88th birthday party. Shiels will interview Bush family members and friends of the 41st President, plus other celebrities, at the Cape Arundel GC, which will be hosting Bush’s charity golf outing in his summer hometown. Copies of Shiels’ most recent book, “Invite Yourself to the Party,” will be presented to every outing participant.
Former Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub are among the leaders, celebrities and CEO’s who are expected to be in attendance at the birthday party.
“I met President Bush when I was 21 years old and have received some personal letters from him over the years, which I cherish and have included in my book,” said Shiels. “He is a very special man, and Kennebunkport is a charming place. I am happy to bring my listeners and viewers to this party!”
Michigan natives Dale Petroskey and John Truscott will participate in the broadcast. Petroskey was a spokesperson for President Ronald Reagan when he came to know Bush; Truscott met Bush while serving as spokesperson for Michigan Governor John Engler. Shiels remembers when his late boss, Detroit radio legend J.P. McCarthy, interviewed Bush aboard Air Force One.
“An event like this is a non-partisan affair,” said Shiels. “President Bush’s years of service to his country – from World War II through his post-White House charitable efforts, are unanimously respected and appreciated.” The golf outing benefits Gary’s House operated by Mercy Hospital in nearby Portland.
The Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush, was scheduled to pass by the President’s coastal Maine home in salute. HBO will begin airing a documentary about Bush, titled “41,” on Thursday.
“Michigan’s Big Show starring Michael Patrick Shiels” airs on radio stations across Michigan, including WDTW AM 1310 in Detroit; WTKG AM 1230 in Grand Rapids, plus Fox 47 TV in Lansing. For a list of affiliates and more information, visit www.MiBigShow.com
